LOS ANGELES - Junior C Eric Munson went 3-for-5 with a home run and scored four times to help the USC baseball team win the 1999 NCAA Regional at Dedeaux Field, as the second-seeded Trojans beat top-seeded Pepperdine, 12-7, on Sunday evening.

Munson was named Most Outstanding Player of the regional, an award he won for the second straight year. He also earned the honor at Clemson in 1998 in USC's run to the national championship.

USC (36-24) will now face Pac-10 rival Stanford, which won its regional in Palo Alto, next weekend (June 4-6) in the super regionals at a site to be determined.

Pepperdine (46-16) had defeated USC earlier in the day, 4-3, to give both teams one loss and force a doubleheader. Pepperdine had to play five games in three days, while USC played four.

The Trojans had a 3-2 lead entering the bottom of the third inning. Then, USC senior LF Jason Lane led off with a solo home run, allowing him to become only the fifth Trojan in history to hit 20 or more home runs in a season. That set off a five-run inning, pushing the Trojans' lead to 8-2.

Pepperdine scored single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but Munson got them back with a two-run home run, his 14th of the season, in the bottom of the sixth to make it 10-4.

The Waves made it 10-7 in the top of the seventh, and the big blow was a two-run pinch-hit single with two out by junior Jeremy White.

But that would be it, as Lane (2-0) pitched 2 1/3 innings of effective relief to earn the victory. The Trojans added a run in both the seventh and eighth innings to pad their lead.
