Box Score

WACO, Tex. -- Centerfielder Chris Durbin got his lone hit of the afternoon when it counted with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th as the No. 9 Baylor Bears outlasted the No. 8 USC Trojans with a 2-1 victory in the first game of a doubleheader. Durbin singled to right, scoring Kyle Reynolds from second base.

Designated hitter Jared Clements led off the 12th for the Bears with an infield single before being replaced by pinch-runner Blake Womble. Reynolds singled to right, but Womble was thrown out at third on a one-hopper by USC right fielder David Gordon (2-for-5). Paul Witt walked before Durbin delivered the game-winning run.

Abe Woody (2-0) threw two scoreless innings in relief for the Bears while USC's Bret Butler (0-1) took the loss.

Baylor won a classic pitcher's due as neither starter figured in the decision. Baylor's Steven White retired 12 straight batters until allowing a single by Metropoulos in the ninth. He went 10 innings, allowing one run on five hits with no walks and nine strikeouts. USC's Brian Bannister went 7 1/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Josh Rummonds, in relief for the Trojans, retired the first eight batters he faced before giving way to Butler in the 11th, who got Michael Griffin to ground out into an inning-ending double play.

First baseman Joey Metropoulos (2-for-5) led off the Trojan second with a double to left center. Travis McAndrews sacrificed him to third and Anthony Lunetta scored Metropoulos on a sacrifice fly to center for the first run of the game.

Baylor had runners at first and third in the fifth. Lunetta made a great defensive play with a back-handed throw to second base for the third out, but the Bears tied the game in the sixth on a sacrifice fly to left by Trey Webb, scoring Ross Bennett.
